GGRLC Adoptable Dogs

There are some adorable new dogs available through Grateful Golden Retriever Rescue Low Country. What better way to spend the weekend of PetFest than to adopt, sponsor, or foster a dog in need! If you’re interested in any of the goldens pictured here, go to the GGRLC website to start the adoption process!

Charlie

Charlie is a two year old big boy who is sweet and loves all other dogs. Charlie needs an active couple who has the time to devote to him and who will continue to reinforce his training. He has been in an in-house training program donated by his former parents and has done very well. He needs to go where he has a fenced in yard, and where he can get plenty of exercise while his people are at home and someone who will take him on hikes and long walks.

Laci

Laci is a beautiful 4-5 year old golden girl who was a stray that found herself at the shelter. The ladies at the shelter called GGRLC immediately and one of our volunteers dropped everything to pick up this lovely girl and get her into a foster home where she got a nice bath and good brushing. She is up-to-date on her shots and is scheduled for her spay. Once she recovers from her spay she will start her heartworm treatment.

Austin

Austin is a beautiful 2 year old who came into rescue when his family realized they couldn’t give him the activity he needed. He is great with other dogs and especially good with children. He has been vetted and will be neutered once he has a chance to settle into his foster home, and then he will be ready for his new family.

Hope

Hope is a 5 or 6 year old girl and was found in the middle of a busy highway. We can’t understand why no one came looking for her because she is a real sweetie. She’s fine with other dogs and cats. Hope has been vetted, but unfortunately is heartworm positive. She will start her treatment once she’s had a chance to settle into her foster home.

Carter

Carter found himself in a shelter and GGRLC bailed him out ASAP. We think he is between 1-2 years. He is very calm for that age. He has settled in with his three foster brothers and sisters and gets along well with everyone. His house manners are very good and he seems to be a very happy boy and comes running across the yard with a big golden smile when called. He is UTD with shots and HW neg. His bags are packed and he is ready for his furever home.

Gus

Gus is a classic Golden — a real water-baby and will retrieve balls and anything else you are willing to throw as long as you’re willing to throw it. He’s 5 yr old, fully vetted and ready to go to an active family, hopefully near water!

Rescue Dogs Star in 101 Dalmatians Musical

The 101 Dalmatians Musical presented by Purina Dog Chow and based on the 1956 novel by Dodie Smith has finally reached New York City. The musical is featuring fifteen Dalmatian rescue dogs. LCD Model Contest at PetFest 2010 Saturday April 10th 10-4 pm & Sunday April 11th 12-4 pm

Do you dream of your dog on the cover of Lowcountry Dog Magazine? Now’s your chance! Enter the LCD model contest at this year’s Pet Fest. It’s a free and fun contest where your dog will meet publisher Leah England and his or her doggie headshot will be taken. Last year 600 dogs vied for the prize! Mark your calendars now for this fun event filled with dog oriented vendors, rescues and shelters, a charity walk, a microchip clinic, frisbee demonstrations, entertainment, food tents and much more. Paws for the Blind Saturday April 10th 10 am-12 pm

Paws for the Blind will take place this weekend in Summerville. Join the Low Country Golden Retriever Rescue in supporting the Lions Programs for the Blind. They will have a table so you should stop by and say ‘Hi’. Visit www.lcgrr.org for more information.

Pet Helpers Junior Volunteer Program Saturday April 10th 2-3 pm

Pet Helpers Pet Support Team is hosting Pet Helpers’ Junior Volunteer Program for ages 6-11. The groups mets the first Saturday of every month in the Pet Helpers Education Room. Contact Christine Bush, Volunteer Coordinator at cbush@pethelpers.org or (843) 795-1110 ext. 25.

Pet Helpers High School Series Tuesday April 13th 4-6pm

Kennel Club Events Open To Mixed-Breeds

New York, NY— A total of 29 American Kennel Club® (AKC®) licensed clubs hosted 75 AKC Rally®, Agility and Obedience trials during the inaugural weekend of events open to AKC Canine Partners program enrollees. Among the many firsts that took place this past weekend, five dogs earned six AKC titles at events in Bakersfield, California, Freehold, New Jersey and St. Louis, Missouri.

“We are excited that our mixed-breed entries in AKC Rally®, Obedience and Agility classes totaled more than 500 around the country during this first weekend,” said AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo. “Purebreds and mixed-breeds had the chance to show off their skills and highlight that it’s the time you spend training and bonding with your dog that really matters the most.”

Nationwide highlights from the first weekend include:

*Michele Capone and her dog “Cheyenne” were the first AKC Canine Partners enrollees to compete. They ran in the Novice Jumpers with Weaves class at the Somerset Hills Kennel Club Agility Trial in Freehold, NJ on April 2, 2010.

*Lynn Candiano with her dog “Rosie” and Sandy Mainardi with “Ginger” became some of the first competitors to put titles on their dogs. They earned the Novice Agility and Novice Agility Jumpers titles respectively at the Afghan Hound Club of Northern N.J. Agility Trial in Freehold, NJ on April 4, 2010.

*At the agility trial hosted by the Gateway Agility Club of Suburban St. Louis, Lauren Murray Bennett and her dog “Timmy” earned their Novice Agility and Novice Agility Jumpers titles on April 4, 2010. Dana Pike Chamberlain and “Tangle” earned their Novice Agility title.

*Sharon Stubs and her dog Katylee became the first mixed-breed team to earn a title in AKC Rally®. They earned their Rally Novice title at the Kern County Kennel Club of Bakersfield in Bakersfield, CA on April 4, 2010.

*Pam Vojtas and her dogs “Charlie” and “Quincy” had qualifying runs at the Dog Obedience Training Club of Hollywood Rally and Obedience trials in Davie, FL on April 3-4, 2010. Pam and her dogs were featured in the March/April issue of AKC Family Dog Magazine.

*The “We Have a Dream Team” formed the first competitive obedience team made up of two mixed-breed dogs and two purebred dogs. Named to express the new spirit of unity that has come to the sport, they competed in the obedience team competition at the Washington State Obedience Training Club event in Seattle.

Dog owners who missed out on this exciting weekend shouldn’t fret – there are more than 2,000 AKC clubs planning AKC Rally®, Agility and Obedience trials open to mixed-breeds in 2010, with more clubs signing on daily.

Mixed-breed dog owners who enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program will not only have the ability to enter the exciting world of dog sports at AKC events, they can save $10 on the AKC Canine Partners $35 enrollment fee if they list their dogs online by April 30. Meet a Lowcountry Dog: Jack & Oliver

Oliver Tillman is a 3 year old Irish setter mix and Jack Tyler is a 5 year old cocker spaniel.

I got Oliver through a college friend. He was given to me the last day of classes my senior year and he actually sat through my final college class with me! (My professor wasn’t so thrilled but he was only 10 weeks old and absolutely adorable so she couldn’t resist!!)

We rescued Jack because his previous owners couldn’t care for him anymore. The best memory with Jack, though is watching him scale the fence like Superman… he’s hilarious!!! Literally- he will jump a 4ft fence go run for a bit and then come home when we call him… it’s so funny!

Both boys love to bark and chase birds, they love going for walks at Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park and they especially love running free at my mom’s house out in the country! Oliver always wants to be at the center of attention and Jack loves snacks and snugglin’. Oliver is really a good dog until he gets in public… then he gets a little anxious and protective… he’s a good guard dog! Jack is always happy-go-lucky and is super sweet!

Oliver was a gift in every way… my other dog that I had had for 16 years passed away 2 years prior to me getting Oliver and I was graduating college so it was really just a blessing to get him… such perfect timing! Jack has made me realize how important we, as humans, are to pets… he hadn’t been taken care of prior to us getting him and his personality from when we first got him to now has completely changed… he’s so much happier and relaxed with us.

Ring in spring with a new furry addition to your family! If you can’t adopt at the moment, these dogs would still greatly appreciate being fostered or sponsored during their stays at the various rescues & shelters throughout the lowcountry.

Take a look at a few dogs would would love to meet their forever families this Easter weekend! Wouldn’t it be great if the Easter Bunny brought you a puppy?

Lucie LuLu, a four-year-old Shepherd mix, was rescued during the winter and is hoping for new beginnings. She was found emaciated, with severe lacerations, and with a very bad case of mange. She has put on a little weight and is all healed up now! She’s even working on growing some fur. She’s very affectionate and gentle, loves other dogs and adores carrying a toy around in her mouth. She’s not ready to win any beauty pageants yet, but she is a fantastic soul with a great canine spirit! Diamond is a sweet Chihuahua and short hair mix that deserves a loving home and a great family. She is one year old. If you think she would be a great addition to your family contact Charleston Animal Society.

Maxx a recent addition to LLR, is a 5 year old male, up to date on vaccines, neutured and heartworm negative. He came in with his sister Sugar when their owner died. He is very sweet and quiet. Well behaved in the house, new to some social situations. Should be placed with another dog. If you think you’d be a great fit for Maxx, check out the Lowcountry Lab Rescue website.

KiKi is a super sweet little girl! She would make a great Agility partner! Kiki loves children! Like most herding breeds, she needs A LOT of exercise. Kiki does have some seperation anxiety. Founder of Grateful Goldens Rescue Dies

Kerry J. Mensching, 54, founder of Grateful Goldens Rescue of the Low Country, died on March 27, 2010. She is survived by her family and friends, including two beloved Golden Retrievers, Doodle and Dillon. For the last 17 years Kerry’s passion was rescuing Golden Retrievers. She was founder and President of Grateful Goldens Rescue. Donations in her memory may be made to Grateful Goldens Rescue (GGRLC), 1406 Waterlily Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.

Thank you Kerry for your life of service. You were cherished by many, and you will be missed.
