A Canine Extravaganza

On Friday, Charleston’s finest paraded through the Stern Center Courtyard downtown under cloudy skies but before a crowd of beaming faces; some of them with their tongues hanging out happily.  Twenty-one canines strutted their stuff in the Inaugural College of Charleston Dog Show, which brought in $527 for Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic. The College of Charleston Women’s Tennis team organized the first-time event and hopes to make it an annual affair.

“The team really jumped at the opportunity because they’re such pet lovers,” said Coach Angelo Anastopoulo, “they were thrilled to help out.” { Check out Coach Anastopoulo and his dog in matching tuxedos below!}

“Especially in this economy, it’s heartwarming to see even college students stepping up to the plate, or the serving line in the case of the women’s tennis team,” said Tracey Erwin, Pet Helpers Development Director.

Local celebrities like Judge Extreme Akim Anastopoulo, Brooke Ryan of 95 SX, and Carolyn Cremmins, wife of Coach Bobby Cremmins, helped to make the event a success.

“I couldn’t resist when I was asked to emcee the Inaugural College of Charleston Dog show. I love Pet Helpers, I love pageants, and when I found out that Lady Gaga – or at least her dog look-alike – was a contestant, I knew it was going to be an event!” said Ryan.

Category winners came from a variety of breeds.  The shaggy Lady Gaga look-alike was flanked by the likes of Daisy Mae the Golden Retriever, accompanied by Mary Ann Nate, the champ in the Best Tricks category with her bounding leaps on command.  Trixie, a pint-sized Yorkie-Poo was hands-down the Smallest Dog, and Greta the Great Dane could have doubled for a pony as the competition’s Biggest Dog.  Miss CoCo Chanel, a tiny white pooch, sported the Best Accessories, showing off her frilly hand-made Elizabethan-style collar, and Darcy the hound had the Most Holiday Spirit as a Christmas reindeer.  Peaches dominated the Most CofC Spirit Category.  The big prize, a $200 prize package from the Wag Factory, went to a Boston Terrier named Roscoe and his owner, Creighton Barrett, who won the Owner Look-Alike category.  Roscoe and his human are both dark-haired and, get this, they are missing the same tooth!
